Someone’s ancestor

Post by Choobox »

This stone in the National Cemetery at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania marks the spot of the most recent discovery of human remains from the battlefield. Discovered by a park visitor after a thunderstorm, forensics found buttons, and uniform accoutrements along with obvious bullet damage to the skull. The remains were found near the railroad cut north of town, where there was heavy fighting on July 1, 1863-the first day of the battle. After positive identification as civil war remains, they were interred with full military honors. As is proper.

Ive walked the entire land mass known as Gettysburg, from the Rebel lines across the field, over the sunken road & fences, then up the low rise to the stone wall...................................out the back of the hills beyond, its a profound experience.
Seems so simple in this age that the position could have been taken, but then, and at huge cost of life, no result.
Its nice to see another fallen soldier given a proper internment.

I live three hours from Gettysburg and try to get there at least once a year. We have a blood relative buried in the Pennsylvania section of the National Cemetery. He served with the 141st Pennsylvania Vol. infantry in the 3rd Corp, Army Of The Potomac under Maj.Gen Dan Sickles. Killed in the Peach Orchard on the afternoon of July 2nd. The fight for the Peach Orchard was one of the hottest conflicts of the war. A truly moving place to visit.
