HELP! Need small 360 rotation servo

Post by BarryC »

Hi Folks,

I'm looking for a 360 Degree Continuous Rotation Servo. I have a SpringRC SM-S4306R and it was perfect for the installation in my HL Abrams lower.

I have swapped over to the Tamiya M1A2 Lower and the servo is now too tall. I need a servo that is 40mm or less in overall height including drive gear.

Anyone have any suggestions?

TIA,
Barry

Servos are not my "thing," so I'm not sure what I'm looking at, but is this any good Barry?

Also for anyone that's interested, there is this rather useful looking servo that can use Lego gears.

Hi Mick,

I looked at that one....I'm thinking I need one with metal gears.

Thanks,
Barry

Have you thought about doing this to a restricted servo that you may find easier to obtain?

Just had a thought about that conversion, if that top gear needs drilling out to be round and remove the D shape, it won't be so easy with a metal gear. You'd probably need access to a lathe, unless you have a way of holding the gear central to the spindle on a drill stand. Then you'd need a number 1 centre drill bit to make a centralised start each side of the gear to remove the worse of the D shape.
A metric number 1 centre drill bit has a small diameter of 1mm, but an imperial one should have a small diameter of 3/64th's, which is very almost 1.2mm. And being so short at the small diameter, it won't flex and veer off like a normal drill bit would.
Then you can drill it out to the required diameter with a normal drill bit held as far in the chuck as possible.

Hi Mick,

I truly appreciate your taking your time to help me.

While going through the modifications need to adapt the Tamiya lower to the HL upper and install HL Ultimate Gearboxes I am also swapping over to a Clark TL60G2 control board. It's has the built in ability to provide Main Gun Stabilization both in elevation and azimuth (target lock).

All this requires a rearrangement of the lower electronics so before I jump into a new servo I will see if I can arrange it so I can lower the servo by placing it in a new location. I was trying to just place it where I had in the HL lower but the false floor height in the Tamiya is close to .5" higher than the HL.

Thanks as always!
Barry
