Stg44 instead of mg34?
Stg44 instead of mg34?
Hey guys, i was going through my references and thought i had something about the king tiger using a stg44 (mp43, mp44) instead of the usual hull mounted machine gun.is this a thing or is i going crazy? Now that my initial tiger is done i can settle back into my favourite thing, paper panzers. Pic for attention

I don't know of any evidence to suggest that Panzer crews were issued the StG '44 as a defensive weapon. Normally, they had the MP 40, because its compact size allowed it to be carried in the turret or hull, and the Walther P38 (which superseded the Luger) as a sidearm.
It's always possible, I suppose, that a crew might have acquired one, and strapped it to the hull.
Here's an infantryman carrying one, in support of a StuG.
It was certainly a revolutionary weapon; the daddy of all assault rifles, including the AK 47, and AR-15.
Here's a discussion on its introduction and use.

I'd certainly like to have a go with one, having already used the AK47 (at a range !); the AR-15; and the Swiss StG '57 (SIG SG 510).

As the Armoured MG34 was no longer in production the Panther Ausf F was intended to be fitted with a coaxial MG42 and a hull ball mounted StG 44.
As the King Tiger was still being produced I would imagine the reasoning would be the same
