I'm looking for photos of a Grey Puma SdKfz 234/2

Post by Snowwolflair »

I have decided to paint my Sdkfz 234/2 in their early grey camouflage. There were few in this scheme and even fewer photos. Can anyone help.

thanks

Per wikipedia the production run was as follows: "101 built between September 1943 and September 1944". Panzer Grey fell out of use before that time period, so you won't find a picture of one in grey.

As I understand it there were up to ten units both pre-production and first built units that were painted grey, hence the scarcity of photos.

I am hoping for photos from the trials a bit like the prototype photos of the Sturmtiger which was built on an early Tiger chassis, were as the production run was on the late chassis.

According to the Nuts&Bolts volume 40 on the SD.Kfz.234, the first photos of the 234/1 test vehicle illustrate a two tone camo of probably 2/3 brown RAL 8020 and 1/3 grey RAL 7027. The first serial vehicles had a base of Dark Yellow RAL 7028. The book also displays pictures of a 234/3 in grey at Bovington, with the comment “painted in extremely poor paint scheme” attached to it.

No grey 234/2 Puma

If you are building a Puma, I recommend this book. It also has pictures and color graphs of the test vehicles.

That is interesting as the brown grey camo does not show up well on B/W photos and could explain why there are descriptions of them being all grey. I will take a look at the book.

This raises the question does anyone know of distinct Grey brown camo photos.

Take note that the series prototype is a 234/1 with the 20mm turret, not a Puma.

I have seen a phot of a Puma /2 which really looks like all grey and it was in a combat situation. This may be a grey/brown and bad colour definition but it is clearly not a dark yellow based camouflage as it was darker than the uniforms of the soldiers next to it. The photos was Eastern front and snow on the ground.

There was never ever a Puma (Sd.Kfz. 234/1-4) with grey colour, they were all built from mid / autumn 1943 onwards and dark yellow colour.
The predecessor of the Puma - the Sd.Kfz. 231 - was build from 1937 to 1943 and have 8 wheel too.
These were with panzer grey colour and are often confused with the Puma.
In black and white pictures all tanks are grey... :haha:

I solved the problem.

The photo I saw was an Eastern Front field overpaint of a grey / white winter camouflage which explains the snow on the ground.
