Yeah a 7.2v nimh is fine, its only a 0.2v drop, this is die to lithium based (lipo/li-ion) battery being 3.7v per cell (2s=3.7×2) and nickel based battery (nimh ni-cad) being 1.2v per cell. (6×1.2=7.2)
Allthough a nickel based battery does need fully discharging before recharge/storage and a lithium can be recharged from any voltage but needs to be stored at 3.7v per cell.
Please correct me me if im wrong but this is how i have been going on..... With no problems (touch wood)

The problem may well be your Charger. I would never rely on a Heng Long or Taigen Charger,
They are cheap and not very good.
