Fishing Shermans
Fishing Shermans
I read the story of the Thomas Donaldson sunk in 1945 by a U-boat in the Barents sea while bringing lend lease Shermans to the Soviet Union. Rediscovered a few years ago, the Russians are bringing up a couple of its tanks every years for museums and restorations.

But one of the "restauration" for a 2018 victory parade is weird. But after all the trouble of bringing it up, I am not sure what the Russians were trying to achieve by adding BMP side skirts, a DSHK machine gun, incorrect front and tail lights, what seems to be APC tracks with 2 connectors on each sides, and applying bizarre color and stripes.

Oh wow, thanks for sharing Louis
Yes, their restoration is a tad weird to say the least lol.
So, does this mean the Russians can now pay what they owe, or should they give them back to the Americans, after all, I'm sure the lease period must be up now

Re: Fishing Shermans
Guess they have to restore the tanks with parts they have as I don't think anyone in the US or Europe can sell tank parts to Russia.
Those metal tracks are making a hell of a mess of the tarmac.

Good find, I remember reading about this once before.
That’s a very weird Sherman restoration, they should stick to T34’s.

Re: Fishing Shermans
The gold extracted there was not much, and sent to Spain only a 20%. (It was like that disctated by law) The other 80 was spent there creating universities, cathedrals and so on. Of the 20% sent to spain, some of the ships did not arrive because storms and so on. And then the british pirates picked some on the way too, lol.
The very few that arrived to Spain was spent in Holland.

Not much to return Im afraid

Re: Fishing Shermans
Actually, most of the Inca gold was used to decorate churches, cathedrals, state buildings etc. And yes, us British used to capture Spanish ships, steal the gold, and use some to pay pirates to steal more although we did gift some of the captured Spanish ships to the pirates for "the cause"
Although in today's market, that next to nothing would be worth billions.
And back on topic, what I love about these pictures, is the E8 style turret on a VVSS chassis, straight from the sea, not been restored, and still as they were constructed and shipped in apparently 1945. Quite a historical significance. Mato turret on a Heng Long with Russian markings, how cool
