Question about Tamiya / Heng Long compatibility (KT tracks)

Post by Lert »

Hello,

I've been absent for a while - better part of a year. Simply didn't have much to talk about or report, my tanking hobby has been on stand-by for that time, seeing as I'm poor and can only dedicate so much of my budget to it.

Anyways, some of you might remember that I'm undertaking the restoration of an old, broken-down Tamiya KT. I'm getting some parts for christmas that I'm going to use to restore the exterior, but that leaves the interior. Now I'm thinking about getting a set of aftermarket 3:1 reduced gearboxes made for the HL KT, and finagle a custom made fitting to help mount it in the Tamiya hull.

Now, I have several questions regarding this:

1) Has anyone ever done that before, putting an aftermarket reduced-gearing gearbox for HL tanks in a Tamiya hull, and did it fit space-wise?

2) Do the old Tamiya sprockets fit on aftermarket gearboxes, or would I need to get a set of HL compatible sprocket wheels?

3) Do the old Tamiya tracks fit on / work with HL compatible sprocket wheels?

I had read in here that the King Tiger tracks are different between the Tamiya and the H/L and Taigen tanks and can't be interchanged. I had asked because I wanted to get the highly detailed metal Tamiya tracks for my Taigen.

No idea about the drive sprockets but if they don't interchange you'll need new tracks too.

That would suck. Fortunately a set of HL tracks isn't expensive. Unless that would also require me to acquire a whole new set of running gear.

I think I read somewhere they you'd need to grind down the sprocket teeth a little. Someone on this forum has done this but I can't remember who. Is this a new version or the old one? I have a feeling that the sprockets on the new one won't fit the axles on anything but Tamiya gear boxes.

Because this was the very old style KT with the single motor clutch drive, which I don't want to use for various reasons and have long since sold on. I still have the original Tamiya drive sprockets and tracks, though.
