Tamiya prices, even for static models are rising remorselessly across the board anyway.. 
Maybe this model is also scheduled to be discontinued, like the Jagdpanther..and the hapless buyer was privy to inside information.. 
In any event, at the rate prices are increasing..and even for used built models, they'll soon be beyond the grasp of some committed Tamiyanistas. If they DO rise much more, the modeller needs to be committed (worthy of the asylum, that is..) in order to buy one.

The Leopard 1 kits were discontinued some time ago. Interestingly enough, the seller's recently sold a few RC Leopards and Gepards for much the same price.
