Two fender-less Tigers

Post by Ecam »

This is clearly Bix's fault. Here is another pair that I am working on and will update this thread as I progress.

Tiger I. I have a Tamiya PzVI and it is going to stay an early production model. This one may have some changes for a mid or late build. And I do like grey German tanks but I read on one of the threads here that very few Tigers were grey/gray (yanks).

Image

Tiger II. I am pretty impressed with this kit (I'm sure there are others out there who would disagree).

Tiger II first because I've done very little to it.

.080 Aluminum (I can only spell it if I pronounce it with a British accent) on the floor and sides.

Image

Styrene floor and bracing. Tons of room in this one.

Cleaning up the underside.

8O Ive created a monster !! Get in Son, embrace the being of Tank..................at least you get to have more camo options than .............Drab :eh: !! :haha:

If you want to have an easy Mid all you need to do is change the cupola and tool positions
An early - do nothing other than the basic H/L mods to get it looking righterer.
A late is a lot more dependent on the roadwheels, idler diameter and drive sprocket hub cap.
Over simplified of course but those are the fundamental visual markers that draw the eye.

The King Tiger on the other hand is a bit more straightforward, but depending on your time period, can also vary significantly from a visual point.
Getting the guards off on an H/L KT is not a simple cut & run. But after looking at that stupendous Sherman recovery vehicle you've done, you got this in bucket loads ;)

Well the Tiger I has the awful wheels where the paired tires are one. So depending on what replacement wheels I come up with will dictate mid/late.

Tiger I. Back in August of 2013 Birger created several threads in the what to fix on your tank section. viewtopic.php?t=11459 Sadly the pictures have gone with the wind. When I had idle time I addressed the issues with the Tiger. There are several other contributors in that what to fix section (and several other tanks).

This one got the same .080 Alum on the floor topped by styrene, but I didn't bother with the sides because this thing is impressively firm with the new floor. By the way my latest supply of aluminum comes from a couple of the local county workers. They are damaged signs some with bullet holes (rural America) some are bent and a couple are ones that were replaced by new signs. Depending on the size of the sign the thickness varies between .080/2mm to .140/3.55mm. And in theory I have a nearly unlimited supply!

Image

One of the mods was adjusting the stock spring pressure by drilling a new hole. Birger's description is excellent, but this picture might help. The stock hole is at the 5:00 position. If you pull your suspension apart the springs are right and left. The arms (at least the plastic ones) are the same on both sides.

Image

Turret centering. Again see his thread. Since it can't be seen, I didn't try to clean it up too much.

Image

I deviated from his instructions a bit here. I cut a rectangle and simply did a 180 and glued back in. It is faint but you can see the lines on the sides and rear of the turret hole. Apparently I did a better job with the front seam.

Image

Edit: to add this picture. With some sanding it shows the front marks. I remembered a rectangle and a 180, but it is clear that my mind isn't. That front gap filler measures 13mm and it is the same plastic. So I cut a rectangle then shifted the turret ring backwards (it has one of the three turret motor mounts). Then that 13mm was glued in the front.

Image

I had read that some were disappointed in the flex on the upper hull. So I added some bracing.

Image

Those mounting post at the turret and rear of upper will be leaving soon.

Image

Wired up the smoke dischargers (that will be leaving soon). Also the front turret lifting lugs and vision slits.

Image

The Rommel box fix. You can see the wedge to change the angle on the left side. And the lifting lug and deeper box.

Image

And finally modified the stock HL drivers vision block.

Ya made the turret centre fix look easy!
A late turret also has extra features like a loaders periscope and grenade launcher and or sockjets for a crane.
But there are a LOT of things to get right depending on your hour/day/week/month/year of the Tiger you like in any pictures
This outfit makes a broad list of changes that is a lot easier to grasp than some of the more specialist sires.

That a pretty good link. Thanks. I've got a few books on the Tigers and I'm not in a hurry (this time). By a quick count six tanks (plus two others inbound) and a large DUKW still in need of work. But I'm embracing the H.B. method of doing things.

Hello Eric,

it is a very good idea to stiffen the upper hull as you are doing here. o- o-

I also started with an HL Tiger when I came to the 1:16 scale. :/

We say that the best way to learn to ride is on an old bike.

happy modelling,Guido
