All LEDs have a certain life to them, but it's like 50K hours of use or something really long. IR LEDs life is probably less than a standard LED as most of these tanks use a slightly higher voltage than the LED is rated for continuously to probably increase the range of the light. They can do this because it is only using like a 2 second pulse. Being that even Tamiya overvolts the LED, they tend to wear out a little fast than they should.

That's a loaded question.

1. If you are talking about any Heng Long system before and including v5.3, they are different protocols and are not compatible with each other.

2. If you are talking Heng Long v6.0 and higher, they are the same protocol. Same protocol means they will give hits and take hits from each other. The HL "mushroom" will take hits from a Tamiya emitter or a HL emitter; although, the Tamiya apple is much more sensitive than the HL mushroom in direct sunlight. Some have designed sun shades for the HL mushroom which improves the hit chances by blocking the sun like the Tamiya apple does. Some others have upgraded to the LegoDEI "apple" for HL or Tamiya. They have a specific apple for each type of tank as the HL apple on a Tamiya tank will burn out prematurely.

3. If you are talking about functionality...then no they don't have the same functionality. The Tamiya software slows down the tank as more hits are taken. It is also programable for light tanks, medium tanks, and heavy tank settings. The Heng Long system does not have that functionality.

4. Electrically, they are slightly different which is why there is a LegoDEI apple for Heng Long v6.x/v7.x and one specifically for Tamiya/Clark/IBU/TCB/ASP boards.
