Notice the roof top slat armor and the Mark of Zorro on Russian tanks entering Ukraine.

I am guessing these ugly and quite inconvenient slat armor is a last minute modifications by a some crews to get protection from US Javelin anti-tank missiles, and RPGs from city buildings. The Javelin hit tanks from above where the armor is weakest.

Lots of new markings for Russian tanks in this war. I wonder if the Russians realized the Z is the Mark of Zorro, applied on bad guy victims. Not the greatest choice, but relevant...

Hmmm... I wonder how effective that actually is against top-attack munitions.

It's really no different than the slat armor using on other modern AFVs. Looks like they are using it as a roof rack for all their gear also. Russian tanks don't have a turret basket like most Western tanks. It is probably decently effective and would keep things like bricks thrown from windows from hitting tankers in open hatches.

Please keep this thread about tank modelling and modelling ideas for model tanks.

Yes, it would be more effective for urban warfare. The open turrets and crew compartments on tank destroyers fell foul of attacks from above during WW II.

Reminds me of the WW2 Russian tank bed spring armour.

Although a Molotov cocktail would still be effective against it as it is basically napalm in a bottle especially if the tank was hit with a bunch of them at once.

Latest news is the Z markings are either friendly ID marks , or , as some units have the Z's in triangles , circles or squares , a marking to help ID different vehicles so as to be sent in the correct direction.
