1/16 WCP RSO & variants

Post by Will01Capri »

Hi Guys
This has been a little bit of a pet project for me as it is a little different, but also offers a unique engineering challenge.

Back in March this year i finished my RSO with everything except the tracks!

The other night however i decided to try and assemble them and get some testing done so i can finish the model.
I also have done a dummy run with hardwired motors to a battery and this thing shows real promise.

A sneak peek above to the chassis coming together.
I still have to fashion a track tensioning mechanism, but i am really happy with it so far

Drive is done using 2x gear reduction 180 motor units, these things are great and have huge torque for small size. Some people may remember me doing som extreme testing with these motors in a small WPL C24 model pulling a metal oil filled radiator on a carpet. On 2s they can really pull a load, which is important for an RSO.

My intention has always been to be able to use is as an offroad tractor unit, so it is going to get abuse and be pushed to extremes.

The whole model is designed by myself from various references and is totally 3Dprinted in PLA.
I developed a new way to create the chassis so that it has strength in multiple directions and i can tell you it is very rigid and extremely strong aswell as heavy.

The wheels and axles are all fully custom and feature full metal ball races and bearings. It also have metal leaf sprung suspension.
I need to somehow fit electrics into it, which may be hard when you see later on what cab design i am using.
Because the model is soo tricky to build this will also be a multiple variant model.
So i will be able to change the cab for 3 different versions & have 2 different setups for the back unit. The only reason to this is because i have little space and also little patience to make multiple sets of tracks for this thing. Those tracks are tricky and also painful to make haha

This is my little baby
I don't really want to have to build another haha

The amount of metal threaded sections i have had to press in and the number of nuts and bolts that live in this model is extreme. But it does mean that it can be serviced and no one needs to worry all too much about threads stripping in the plastic.
The bearings in some parts are expensive due to their size.

I don't think the model will be cost effective if Catherine were to sell it, the rear axle alone has been built with strength and serviceability in mind, but costs £80 to make with the gears and bearings etc

I am happy to keep it for myself hahaha

They are beautiful
I would love to see one of those working in RC, is he on RCTW?
I wonder if a set or tracks and sprockets would be available, he looks like a talented man
