Nothing 'ERA' about those bags, they are sand or dirt filled sacks. Which will still be somewhat effective as they are still trigger the warhead further away from the main armour, the extra 150mm or so of extra height might just be the difference between armour breach and nasty skid mark.

Yes these bags are not ERA but they are supposed to be !!
Looks like the front of the cage is hinged and linked to the barrel, but that could also be an optical illusion!

Cage armor and sandbags (this is not any ERA armor) are ineffective against the Javelin warhead.

In fact, the Javelin has TWO warheads. The first one is to defeat (destroy) the reactive / bar armor, and the second one explodes with a delay to defeat the main armor.
All "structures" used by Russians on their vehicles - are designed to improve their well-being before death comes from above ...

As I said, if the weapon targets a point above the silluette, and you can make the visual outline sufficiently high enough above the actual vehicle (same goes for the radar signature for a top attack artillary or air dropped submunition), then the explosively formed penetrator from the second warhead will have lost enough energy before it reaches the main armour to completely penetrate. Its not a completely stupid idea, but like the 'fake ERA' blocks, its probably more for crew reassurance than any practical use.

That said, I've seen at least one picture / video of a T72 with a couple of dents/soot stains on the 'visor' (or is it a 'Pergola'?) in addition to what ever eventually caused the crew to cut and run, so it obviously stopped attacks from something.

All Im looking at is that it makes a very interesting addition for anyone doing a T-90 Heng long model.
I also like the way that the T72 in Syria has been modeled as a very beaten up MBT.

This thread is about ideas for models that we otherwise would not know about.....................not politics(just a reminder)

So far, i have noticed that the Russian are using older equipment in Ukraine, like old but modernized T-72 and T-80, old SAM vehicles, old APC like MTLB troop carriers that i thought were scrapped a long time ago. Other than for some artillery and rocket systems, none of the latest weaponry is used, like the BMPT Terminator, which would be a lot more adapted to the Ukrainian urban fighting. That may explain why we see so many abandoned Russian tanks. Russian crews are worth more than their old expendable material. If something goes wrong with their vehicle due to breakdown, lack of fuel or attack, the crew simply leave it there, walk back to their lines and pick up another one. It makes nice pictures for the Ukrainians to show blown up Russian tanks but it is clear that the Russians use expendable material and keep their latest hardware to face Nato.

However, i think they will run through their stockpile of Iskander and Kaliber missiles at one point.
