1/16 RC BRDM-2 Soviet Combat Recon Patrol Vehicle - Build

Post by lmcq11 »

The BRDM-2 (Boyevaya Razvedyvatelnaya Dozornaya Mashina), meaning Combat Reconnaissance Patrol Vehicle) is an amphibious armoured scout car designed and developed in the Soviet Union in the 1960s. It is of the same class as the American V-100 Cadillac Gage Commando. It is still in operation today in many countries.

It has been a few years since i have done a wheeled vehicle. In preparation for an upcoming M-8 Greyhound build, i felt it was time for me to go back into the world of wheels and regain some of the expertise i had previously gathered with the V-100, V-150, Puma, TPZ Fuchs and Boxer GTK builds.

I had this kit... well its mostly an empty resin shell with a few parts, of a 1/16 DRDM-2 purchased from a Russian seller maybe 4 years ago, long before the Ukrainian war when all Russian sellers disappeared from eBay. The model has been sitting on the shelf all that time, awaiting that i gather some courage to start it.

It seems to me that the designer who built the original BRDM-2 model decided at one point to replicate it to make some money. In the process of making the molds, he had to basically destroy all the details he had build. So, what was provided was a very basic kit of the armored shell with turret and few other parts. All the details need to be rebuilt from scratch. I am dissapointed that the armor of the front windows cannot be raised and are molded shut, i will do something about that because it is important for the BRDM-2 look.

It's an empty shell, leaving the builder to ponder his options for completion, including all the mechanical components and electronics.

These are all the other parts provided, main machine gun elevation pivot, two hatches, 4 wheel hubs, one searchlight, one ventilation cover and one spade. That's all.

I purchased the matching rubber tires later from the same Russian seller when i saw them available. Finding and selecting appropriate tires are as much of an issue with wheeled vehicles as finding tracks for scratch built tanks. I was glad when these were offered, even if somewhat expensive.

Another luck was the availability from Live Resin of a 1/16 representation of the 14.5 mm KPVT heavy machine gun.

The distinctive and complex barrel will add realism to the model. It will need to be carefully drilled through and reinforced with a metal tube, and will have a fiber optic for the flash. Sadly, all the rest of this nice kit will be discarded.

To help me with the mechanical components and provide some base to build on, i did a lot of investigation and decided to purchase an MN-90 RC 4x4 vehicle. The spacing between the two axels seemed perfect.

On the surface, it is a nice model, looking good.

However, the mechanical parts are mostly all cheap plastic, including the gears inside the axels. Only the frame is in metal.

As a "crawler", it is equipped with a ridiculous size 130 motor. That's just wrong.

From previous experience with these tiny gearbox and motor on a large model like this one, it is not even powerful enough to make it climb on a carpet sitting flat on the floor.

A cheap way to immediately improve it a bit would have been to replace the 130 motor by a 180. However, i decided to replace the whole thing with a metal gearbox with 370 motor designed for WPL trucks i had on inventory, leftovers from a previous build.

And when you start replacing plastic by metal, need to go all the way. So, it will be given new metal axels, shocks and drive shafts, also designed for WPL trucks.

And here we have the new improved chassis for the BRDM-2. Only the thick and solid plastic tie bars matching the metal frame are reused. That's all of what is left of my investment on the MN-90 4x4 truck...

The BRDM-2 wheel are mounted on regular WPL plastic rims. Don't look at the rotation direction, i did not bother about it at this time.

A HL TK 7.1 control board and remote will provide the main electronics for the build. I needed a control board with combat capabilities for the turret KPVT main gun and PKT coax machine gun, with turret rotation and gun elevation, something not possible with a Racing board. The steering servo is connected to CH5 servo port and controlled with the slide bar under stick 2 (only on TK 7.1).

Test runs were done, including crawling over objects. All is working well between the TK and the gearbox, providing reasonable speed but also super low speed control for crawling. This is really powerful stuff.

Weird, i am noticing that the frontal metal axel with the steering is 2mm longer on each side than the rear axel without steering, wth. I will have to do something about that because i want all my wheels to be properly aligned with the hull.

There is a lot of space on the interior sides to put electronics like battery and speaker, freeing some space on top for the turret rotation unit and other stuff i have in mind. I will need to design a structure to hold it all together inside the hull, and create some wheel wells to protect the inside of the vehicle from dust, mud, etc. No, it will not be amphibious.

Hello Louis,
nice build.
I have several sets of the CNC axes in use.
Please check the setting of the ring gear and pinion.
This has always been set too far.
This only gives you short pleasure, then the pinion spins or loses teeth...

Another very interesting project and presentation. I remember that Russian seller! He had very unique things, I still regret not buying the fantastic Soviet tank riders figures from him.

PS. Due to the reorganization of the forum, wheeled and half-tracked vehicles will have a separate section soon.

Cool project - I'll be very interested in it. I have the files to print the BRDM-2 in 1/16th and another set in 1/6th that has function belly wheels and swims. Maybe one day I'll get around to building it. I'm more interested in the 1/6th scale one as it's fully functional.

Hello,

This post is for the turret and armament.

There is limited documentation on the BRDM-2. Below is a rare view of a suberbly restored East German BRDM-2 with its original armament. Most of the walk around pictures on the web have the guns removed or replaced by inaccurate metal tubes.

The Live Resin 14.5mm KPV-44 high caliber machine gun resin barrel is superbly delicate. It needs to be made hollow in order to carry a fiber optic for the flash. It is quite long and there is no fine drill bit or modeller that can realistically do the job in one single attempt. That small barrel handle is especially fragile and could break at any wrong move.

1/16 RC BRDM-2 Soviet Combat Recon Patrol Vehicle - Build

2.jpg (1021.28 KiB) Viewed 105 times

My strategy was to cut it in 3 sections carefully selected and drill them separately. A 1.2mm brass tube is inserted to reinforce the barrel and carry the fiber optic.

Once all 3 sections are hollowed, the barrel is re-assembled and glued around the central brass tube for an almost seemless integration. Now i have a reinforced 1/16 scale KPV machine gun with a inner tube for the flash and connection to the mantlet and LED.

Keep in mind it is not easy to do this and I had to use all my skills. It is difficult to make a hole that does not go a bit sideways and potentially ruin the barrel.

For turret rotation, a mid size VEX Robotics gear is used. A central section is removed to provide access for the gun elevation system.

The resin mantlet was cleaned up and perforated for the main and coax machine guns before installing inside the turret using two short rods as pivot on both sides. The turret was given a new bottom and a set of rings that match the turret ring on the hull. The gear was given a plasticard plate to link the turret from inside the hull, with 4 M3 hex bolts.

The custom servo elevation unit is thoroughly tested. What is nice about the HL TK 7.1 control board is that the low and high degree for elevation can be easily set uning the K2 button.

The turret is installed on the upper hull. The resin machine gun is positioned only for the look. It will be attached to the turret with the LED and fiber optics only at the end of the build. It would otherwise be damaged during construction. A brass tube was added for the 7.62mm PKT coax machine gun and will also receive its fiber optic and LED at the end of the build.

The electronics are added for testing purposes. The TK 7.1 fits inside the right pocket, and the battery fits inside the left one. A thinner speaker is added and will be positioned at the front next to the main switch. Once the cables will be attached together, the mid section is available for the turret rotation and elevation servo to turn freely. The rear is given to the turret rotation unit attached to the inside of the upper hull.

With this setup, the electronics are completely isolated from the running gear dirt, water and mud.

Thanks. Indeed, after investigation, the cup and pinion are really too much extended. Before trying to modify them, i checked my spare part bin containing leftovers from past builds and noticed another frontal axel of a much better quality and shorter by a couple of mm.

This new one has beautiful cardan swing chafts. So, although there are quite a few of these metal (replacement for WPL) axles that all look alike on eBay and sell at about the same price, they are not equal in terms of quality. Something i will keep an eye on.
