Found this on the web while looking for some other information. Can anyone confirm if this is true?

I managed to put on the the tracks with the chevrons going forward and backwards, and in the same direction.

Yes it's correct.

As far as I am aware the very early Tigers did have separate left and right hand tracks but the right hand links were dropped quickly for logistical reasons.

Look for section 3.4.1.12 on page 75 that discusses this change around October 1942.
