Interesting topic and discussion.
In addition to all of the above, I'm thinking tank size influenced external stowage as PZIII and Stug III are quite cramped but always at the forefront of the push. If I was a grizzled vet that had been burned a couple of times by the horewagons not catching up to me for din-din or other supplies, I know I'd be welding up a stowage rack. Ditto for a T34 or Su76 crew.
Plus those other necessities like some wood for fires or unsticking, water containers, tarps to keep the rain and dust out, ropes and wires to lash up branches and netting, etc.
Then there's that Stug with a truck tire on its rim stuffed on the engine deck...We Deliver!
