RX-18 MAX LOAD OR AMPS

Post by Saxondog »

Well here it goes,My FAT Tiger is a little over 6kilo's and in reading previous post like the one on inline fuses between battery and board I installed today Graupner 480race motors and 5amp inline fuse between battery and modified RX-18 BOARD from rccommand.I have yet to put these motors under stress, mainly because I AM STILL WORKING OUT SOME ISSUES WITH MY GUN,That being said has any one installed 400 or larger motors with the new RX-18 board? I have pm-ed Rob about an older post he had concerning 400series motors, but he had not taken the plung. If not my gun issues should be solved by next week and I will post the resultes after putting my Tiger thru some ruff terrain testing. But any input would be helpful before I BLOW SOMETHING UP again. I think those 480s draw 10 amps each at low load.  Not sure an RX18 even with a fan could handle that.

At 4 Kilos your Tiger is still a lightweight.  If you want more torque, it's in the gearboxes, not the motors.  89:1 ratio of the Asiatam gearboxes with Graupner Speed400s will get you about 1.2mph versus 1.50mph scale max with a boatload of tractive effort to spare!

Thanks for the info,I should have mentioned I have upgraded 3:1 roller bearing gearboxes from Welshdragon. And metal track and drive/idler wheels on an Asiatam Tiger Hull.Powered by 3300mah battery.I'm going to up the fuses to 7.5amp and install fuses on the motor positive leads. Will post the results next week when I hope my gun issues will be resolved.sax

The 3-1s will decrease the amp draw on the motors.  I posted results last year on my Tiger 211 build over at RCU.  Mine runs Jamara 480s through those gearboxes with El-Mod and HL radio.

Did you have mounting issues, the shaft boss on the front of the motors was a to big to fit thru the gearbox panel, had to bore it out slightly, pinion shaft was bigger also so had to bore pinion gears.how about your build did you have these problem's?

No, the Jamra 480s are long can 400s, same mounting and 2.3mm shaft size.  I did have to remove the flux rings as the motors were touching and wouldn't allow the gearboxes to fit on their mounts flush.

After a year of running, it's much too much power.  So powerful it throws tracks because the adjustable idlers don't have the tension to hold the tracks taught when El Mod spins the motors to 29000 rpms!  Also difficult to drive in a straight line.  This is older version of El Mod, before they optimized the firmware to run the Jamara 480s with 3-1 gearboxes.

The most powerful motor you really need with 3-1 gearboxes in a Tiger are the Graupner Speed400s or their equivelent.  Plenty of torque, you'll never be able to stall them over the toughest terrain even in a 14lb tank.
