Marine Steam

Post by xrad »

Hi everyone. Well, I found a new build for the spring..and it is not a tank. So unfortunately, I will be taking a break from tanks until end of summer/begining of fall. I may post a few things here or there, but no in depth builds.

Here is part of new project, Saito marine boiler and alcohol heater. Going into a fiberglass tugboat (I am building) from 'turn of century' type desing. Have to build the steam engine....

I might post a few pics..

Excellent steam boiler, must have been expensive. The boiler looks very turn of the century. What made you decide on a tug boat?

Hi Sax,

Looks old, but really only a few years old..not expensive..won on ebay. Saito is pretty common brand, they make the model airplane engines...

I always liked live steam models..just had an opportunity to get into it....

I have a older paddle wheel river boat a friend gave up on and let me have it minus the steam engine. I remember Sears sold these same steam engines that would run a small saw and some other attachments very cool. I raised a point about the steam engines before on another forum in a on Global warming. We as a planet burned 1000's of tons of coal for at least 100years and asked them to explain why the did not impact the planet more that oil does, thy banned me for creating a question they could not explain away.To Funny.

What scale is the Tug Boat? I may need your help after the Arizona is finish, never know when a tug boat may come in handy. At freedom lake a local park that allows electric or steam power boats their always seem to be many tugs compared to warships they are popular that's for sure.

Keep the pictures coming this is interesting and should be a very cool project to follow, Sax

Hi Sax:

It is the Dumas Brooklyn tug kit, but the kit sucks as it is mostly cheesy plastic. I am just using it as a guide.

Steam engine is from Graham industries..if the guy ever ships the kit.

Steam expansion engine, twin cylinder the basic steam engine for the first 100 years of steam. Replaced by Turbine in the early 1905 with Dreadnought, but the USN continued to use this type of drive until the Oklahoma, last battleship equipped with Triple expansion steam engines.

Very cool indeed, she should have a lot of bottom end with such a large balancing weight. Wonder if the rods are plain bearing? Is their some type of oiler for the crank or just a few drops from an oil can and go? Very cool is this your first ship or have you built others?

These engines have always been interesting to me, the basic engine of industry for a century. What did you mean about shipping? Do you already have the boiler but the engine has not shipped? I would be worse than a kid at Christmas waiting for the engine to arrive.

Please keep the pictures coming XRAD this is very interesting stuff.

Hi guys! I looked around at other model sites but none as nice as this one. So...I hope you don;t mind if I post my steam build here even though this is primarily a tank site.

I am using the Dumas kit but unfortunately the hull is ABS(and many superstructure parts as well...) which does not hold up to heat too well. So i coated the hull in mold release wax and then fiberglassed it..hopwfully, it will pop out. Of course , normal molds are done opposite of this way with gel coat first..not last... :D

steam engine from Graham industries..super nice kit..includes tools and 400 grit paper and all gaskets....kit is machined..just some finish work. REALLY AWSOME kit for the price (~340 WITH shipping, marine flywheel and brass finish screw kit) much cheaper than Cheddar or Stuart...however, some parts are aluminum which may hasten wear..and the cylinder rings are teflon or silicone...not metal..but for the price, can;t beat it.

PICS below.

Maybe I make this into old Navy tug...

so it was sunny enough to give the hull another two glass coats..and while still a little flexible...I popped the form out..no issues at all

next will be a few rounds of sanding/glassing/auto body filler to smooth out the shape

Thanks Ice!

Some basic layout stuff. Burner, boiler, boiler hand pump, engine, and condenser...

Saito boiler has a throttle valve which is real nice. forward/reverse engine. rudder. ..looks like four channel radio will do the trick.

Boiler and burner will go on one metal mount and engine on a seperate mount..due to tight space
