Replacing WSN with Taigen 2.4ghz electronics

This section is for builds that are not strictly Tamiya or Heng Long. For instance, replacing the electronics from a WSN or Matorro, or even a scratch-build.

Replacing WSN with Taigen 2.4ghz electronics

Post by Arnie_DK »

Hi

I have two WSN tanks (Tiger 1 and T-34/85) I wish to convert to 2.4ghz from Taigen, so they can run with my recently aquired Metal versions from Taigen.

I have purchased the board/speaker/control kit and IR receiver with flash unit from rctank.de but I understand there can be a problem with the recoil of the WSN tanks, when hooking it up with this board.

Pretty sure I have completed the internet several times, trying to find a solution or a guide for properly installing the Taigen board, but have come up empty. Mostly because the guides I have found are very old and some info is outdated and pictures are not available anymore.

So, any help in this task, would be greatly apreciated! :D

Just to clarify exactly what I have:
T-34: https://www.torro-shop.de/en/rc-tank/rc ... stem?c=144
2.4ghz kit: http://www.rctank.de/NEW-24-GHz-remote-kit-for-tanks
IR receiver kit: http://www.rctank.de/Infrared-battle-system-HENG-LONG

Cheers
Morten

Arnie, welcome to the forum. I have done couple of conversion on the WSN T34s, and if memory serves me right, you will have to gut almost everything, as WSN is not really plug compatible with the Taigen electronics. In addition to the radio and MFU sets you already gotten, you might want to get the RX-18 wiring set as well. The recoil mechanism is also quite a different beast, and I am afraid you either have to do without, or transplant a Heng Long recoil unit.

Thanks :)

I had come to understand, that the Wiring in the turret could go into the new board, and with a bit of clever re-wiring you could also make the gun recoil work?
But it might be easier to just replace all the stuff in the turret for HL/Taigen parts you say?

Hej Arnie. Rart med en dansker mere :-)

I have done the conversion on a WSN T34, including HL ir and working recoil. You will need HL wiring and a lot of patience.
If I remember correctly, I moved the recoil/sound swits on recoil unit.
taigen tiger1 late ir
HL sherman 105mm BB
HL Sherman M4A3E4ish.BB
HL JP recoil, traverse.
HL M26 ir
HL KV1 ir
WsnT34 ir
HL KV2ish
HL Tiger1 early
HL Panzer IV, ir

Arnie, it would definitely be easier to replace the recoil with a HL unit if you are using Taigen electronics. I upgraded to servo recoil with Clark electronics and did managed to salvage most of the WSN recoil which in my opinion is actually better than the HL ones..... Here is a pic:

You stillhave the complication of integrating the WSN elevation unit with the HL unit........ Maybe others had done something similar ?

What parts would I need to replace the workings in the turret??

Recoil unit and a gun elevation motor? Anything Else?

The Tiger seems fairly simple, but I cant seem to find what is needed for the T-34.

Will theese parts do it?

Tiger 1:
Recoil kit http://www.rctank.de/Tiger-I-gun-action ... gun-holder

T-34:
Recoil unit http://www.rctank.de/HENG-LONG-GUN-ACTI ... PGRADE-KIT
Gun elevation unit (big or small?? ) http://www.rctank.de/Heng-Long-Gun-Elevation-Unit-small
Gun elevation unit for Stug maybe? http://www.rctank.de/STUG-III-elevation-motor

Would the turret rotation unit need an upgrade as well?? http://www.rctank.de/Heng-Long-Turret-Rotation-Unit

Anything I missed??

Arnie,

The rotation unit is fine. No need to change it.

The HL recoil for the T34 will take up most of the turret length wide, so you will need the Stug elevation as it sits on the side. There won't be room at the back for the other elevation unit.

Its almost easier if you can get a hold of a working HL Tiger/T34 turret and just bolt it onto the WSN hull.

I don't know about these eBay sellers so this is just an example.

Thanks Michael.

I had actually come to the conclusion it might be easier, and maybe even cheaper, to just get a new turret. rctank.de have a tiger 1 upper hull with IR turret and all kinds of fancy lights in the hull, that would cost a lot more, if I where to buy the parts individually.

They dont have a T-34 turret though, so I will check that bay of e :)
