The 1st Panther is Started........

Post by JayBrd »

Well here's my first wack at an Armor build of any sort in about 30'ish years. I've had her for a month or so and have been busy collecting ref and parts since. It's been some time since I've done any sort of a build thread, so bare with me :/
I am "planning" on keeping this one a G and doing up #321 from the 116th Pz Div.

I have the Stencil set from RCTank.de already

So far I've been slowly working on the hull this last week.

-Mato 3:1 gearbox's w/ Great Planes T-400's (the black endbell ones went poof right off the bat)
-Asiatam Wheel / Suspension arm set
-Asiatam Sprocket / Idler set
-Asiatam Rear Tensioner
-Stock HL RX18 for now, full ElMod very soon

The start...

After a quick prime and paint..

The one thing I did notice was the popular arm wobble. Well, after endless hunting for some sort of a shim or spacer. I noticed the shoulder of the bolt is a tad longer

So I tried a bit of a trick, and countersunk the hole a tad with a #1 Phillips driver, BINGO! works like a charm!

All of the roadwheels mounted and ready for the tracks and Sprockets.

I plan on starting the upper deck here soon. I decided to go a mix of Tamiya detail parts, as well as more from Dominique of course. here's the start of the parts collected so far.

I am still debating on taking the PE plunge or not. And also if I will keep the HL turret or go for the Wecohe or a Tam turret. But we'll see what happens....

More to come...

Excellent observation of the control arm issues,I will follow your example on my Jagdpanther. Also interested in the grills and how you install the one over the Fan blades or under loosing the fan? Just an issue I have seen this done both ways, and it would seem practical to cover the moving fan blades. Will watch with interest, Saxondog

Sax you talking the crew heater box one on the rear deck, or the RX18 cooling fan?? I have a "trick" up my sleeve for the rear deck, but going to leave the board fan open (the turret crew will have to watch thier feet :haha: )

Rear deck left side with external fan blades, the grills are to small to cover the fan properly. On my Jagdpanther this just bothered me to a point but I have stopped that build until this post when I started to consider this issue again,as for RX18 cooling all my tanks have the same elevated double fan cooled system started in my Tiger.

Small fan on top, board mounted on stand=off nuts and the large fan on the bottom compete circulation and never fried a board yet. Also use the Asiatam component tray for compact ease of install and simple uniform design.

But hey your skills are well beyond mine so please continue and I'll follow with interest. Saxondog

Sax,
The external portion is the screen support for the crew heater as far as I know....

Not much of an update as of yet, but I did breakdown and order a Tamiya turret and exaust arrestor parts tree for her yesterday. I am hoping to get started on the upper hull later today..

I may have jumped the gun a tad and siliconed the electronics in a tad early, but can easily pull them if I need to.

Got some of the bigger Tam details fitted this aft.....Off with the old.

And on with the new..

I still have to flop the hooks around and remove the grab handle for the last of the major work. I am going to wait on the tow cable holders until I am ready to prime and base coat it so I don't bust them off beforehand :P
For some reason resizing is not working :wtf:
More to come....
