TARR Smoker units and Rx 18

Post by tao »

Heard a lot of great things about the TARR smokers do they work well on stock Rx-18 boards? Thanks! Tom

It should work okay with rx18. The heater element resistance is the same on the Hl smoker and the tarr. Only downside maybe the fan might be too fast but sure you can figure out a way to slow down or reduce blow hole etc.

Thanks Ian!
It's not proportional the way it's set up now..correct?

That's correct just full power.

If your okay with soldering it's easy to convert to proportional with a few diodes and a voltage regulator.

Hi Ian,

I am going to have to slow it (fan) down for sure as it does
preform better at slower speed..good call!
Do you know the spec on the resistor in there?
Or aprox specs..I see quite a range of suggestions.

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

I’ve not played around with resistors to reduce the speed so no advice on what size resistor to use.

A trick I tried, was remove the fan and put some tape over the hole, then put a pin prick size hole in the tape then put fan back on. Because the hole is smaller less air forced in slows smoke coming out of it.

Hi Ian

Actually I meant the resistor that heats up.. what is a good spec for those?
Does it have to be "wire wound" Trying to get some to use to replace on
my super smoker.

For the fan slow I used diodes but I like simple so I'm trying your method first!!

Thannks

Hi Tom,

In the TARR it’s a Nichrome wound wire. Which acts as a high resistance for it’s length wire and produces heat as a by product. It is possible to use other wires or even resistors, but I think sticking to the wire wound resistors will last longer due to the heating and vibrations when installed in the tank.

The resistance heating element of the Heng Long and TARR smoker is 15ohms, going lower creates more heat but draws more current. I used 12 ohms with RX18 with out causing damage, but will also drain battery quicker.

Back to slowing the fan down. If you look at the wiring diagrams for the RX18 the battle unit runs on 4.5v supply so if your not using the IR battle unit maybe wire the fan into that socket so it will run slower.

Cheers

Will copper wound wire work okay too? Haven't located Nichrome
if you have a link that would be great too!
